August 27th, 1952, In Montgomery Alabama.

The realization that I am carrying Derrick’s child hasn’t really sunk in fully yet. But I know it soon will. In a couple of months my belly will start to show, only thank God it will be away at college up in Vermont. I will try to have the baby in secret there, and then give it up for adoption. If I should change my mind and want to keep it, then I know I will have to flee to Canada, far away from the reach of my influential and angry sheriff father.

I miss Derrick more than words can possibly say.

I have no souvenir, other than the growing baby, to remind me of him. They have burnt all his things, including all he had in his parent’s home. His parents live with friends now, and I’m sure they miss their son too.

Some friends told me that they saw the hanging, with poor Derrick kicking and screaming as they kept yanking him up and down off the ground by the neck as their torches burned and they stood in their white hoods in a circle around him. Somebody said the very governor was there and hooded as well. Is that true? How should I know? I wasn’t there. They say it took him two hours to die. They would yank the rope and lift him off the ground, his hands tied behind his back. He would kick and holler until they lowered him enough for his tippy toes to touch the ground. After a while they began lengthening the time they took to lower him to the ground until finally he stopped hollering and kicking.

I suppose I should have seen it all coming, and looking back on it now, I feel I was being so naïve and foolish for having a taboo affair in a town so staunchly immersed in racial segregation.

July 18th, 1982. Montgomery, Alabama.

It’s exactly thirty years to the day that they hung poor Derrick out in a field behind his parent’s burning house.

Looking back on it now, I suppose I should have known what would have happened by having that illicit affair. And I wish I could tell you a much different story than the one I just did, or lie and tell you there was a happy ending back then or even today, but real life isn’t like that.

Why didn’t I see the warning signs when I first started getting close to Derrick? I suppose I did see those signs, but I was too in love to care, and if truth be told, to this present day, some thirty years later, I’m still too in love with my long gone Derrick.

I’m not sure where his grown son grew up or even where he lives now. Ever since the adoption, a part of me is glad I’ve lost track of him. I wouldn’t want him to share my tear filled sorrow over the grisly fate of a father he never knew. It’s good enough that the people reading this now know.
